CHAPTER

SEVENTEEN

"Not today, Ethan." I heard Jordan say as I stood in her doorway.

It was nice to be able to see her relaxed for once. I felt this weird sensation blooming inside my chest, and I frowned before pushing it down. I didn't want to think about any feelings I harbored for her that weren't me terrorizing her.

I cleared my throat. "Not today, what?"

Jordan quickly turned around, and I could see the shock written across her features. It wasn't like I'd come in through the window this time. No, I'd noticed nobody was home and entered through the front door. It wasn't as if they locked it anyway. They had nobody to blame for that more than themselves.

She jumped out of her seat, and I had to snort to stop myself from laughing. It was so easy to ruffle her feathers, and that was why I enjoyed doing it so often. I could always guarantee that I'd get a reaction from her.

"Ethan," she hissed, a bit out of breath, and ran her fingers through her hair in frustration. "What the fuck are you doing here? How did you even get in?" She looked beyond frazzled, and she put her hands on her hips.

"Your front door was open."

Jordan rolled her eyes. "How convenient."

For some reason, it bothered me that she was upset with me. What was wrong with me? Since when had I cared about what she thought or felt? I needed to get those thoughts out of my head before I did something I'd regret.

"Why are you avoiding me?"

She frowned. "I don't know. Because I don't like you?"

"Does telling yourself that make you feel better?" I asked her. "You know how you feel about me. I know how you feel about me. Can we stop pretending that there's something different going on?"

She put her hands on her hips defiantly. "We can do that as soon as you decide that you want to stop being a jerk."

"Wow, look at that confidence in you," I admonished. "I'm so proud of you."

She seemed to try to calm herself with a few deep breaths. "Now that you've officially wasted my time, how about you leave?" she suggested and sent me a smile that lacked any type of humor.

"Oh, don't be so mean," I pouted at her, but she was hardly acknowledging it.

"You're not going to leave, are you?" she asked, feigning disappointment.

I shrugged. "Not until I want to."

"Then what do you suppose we do?"

I gazed at the television that was on. It seemed like Jordan was watching some kind of romantic comedy. It wasn't my type of movie, but I'd bear through it with her just to be able to spend time with her. I frowned as I thought about that fact before pushing it away. There were different things I had to focus on.

"Let me watch the movie with you." It was more of a demand than a question, but she shouldn't expect anything less from me. I wasn't a gentle guy. I never had been, and I never would be.
